Historical accomplishments of the University

Foundational era (1967-1977)

July 17, 1967The University College opened offering a 2-year Associate in Arts program with a strong liberal arts education system; the Physical Education Department was created under the University College.
May 19, 1968The Graduate Institute for Teachers was established and offered MA in College Teaching, MS in College Teaching and MA in Teaching.
October 15, 1968The Institute of Extra-Mural Studies was established to non-degree programs like the Human Resource Development program.
July 1, 1969The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) was opened offering the following courses: AB Literature, AB Economics, AB Political Science, AB Mass Communication, AB History and AB Psychology. The College of Sciences (CS) was also established and offered BS Botany, BS Mathematics, BS Chemistry, BS Geography, BS Geology, BS Physics, BS Medical Teaching and BS Zoology. The College of Business Economics and Public Affairs (CBEPA) opened and offered Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Public Administration, Bachelor of Business Management, and BS Criminology. The City Teachers College (CTC) opened and offered Bachelor of Science in Education majors in History, Biology or Mathematics. The College of Technology opened and was divided into 3 divisions, each offering its own courses: Division of Engineering and Industry: BS Chemical Engineering, BS Civil Engineering, BS Computer Engineering, BS Electronics and Communications Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering, BS Industrial Engineering, BS Mechanical Engineering, BS Naval Engineering, and BS Sanitary Engineering; Division of Technical and Vocational Education: Bachelor of Industrial Education, Bachelor of Technical and Vocational Education; and Division of Applied Science: Bachelor of Technology major in various Engineering fields. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing was first offered. The PE Department became an integral part of the College of Education.
July 1, 1970The College of Communication Arts was created and it offered Bachelor of Communication Science.
June 1971The different divisions of the College of Technology were phased out and only the following courses were offered: BS Chemical Engineering, BS Civil Engineering, BS Electronics and Communications Engineering, BS Electrical Engineerings, and BS Mechanical Engineering. The Institute of Extra-Mural Studies was renamed Institute of Continuing Education and Community Services with the following curricular programs: 1-year General Clerical, 2-year General Secretarial, and 3-year Library Aide courses.
September 27, 1972Birth of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), merging the University College, College of Arts and Letters, College of Sciences and the College of Communication Arts with the aim of fuller integration of courses towards a truly liberal education. The curriculum offerings were: AB Psychology, BS Chemistry, BS Mathematics, BS Zoology, AB Mass Communication and BS Social Work. The CBEPA was renamed College of Business Administration (CBA) offering BS Business Administration majors in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Economics, Management or Marketing. The City Teachers College was renamed College of Education offering the same curricular programs.
June 1974The Graduate Programs for Bachelor of Business Management and Business Administration were placed under the College of Business Administration.
1975The Physical Education Department was transferred under the supervision of the College of Arts and Sciences.
1976A Post-basic/Supplemental Course to Bachelor of Science in Nursing was offered.
1977The Graduate College for Teachers offered new programs such as: MA Educational Administration, MA Guidance and Counseling, MA Mathematics, MA Psychology, MA Mass Communication, MA Physical Education, and MA Social Sciences.

 

Development era (1978-1988)

1978The Physical Education Department's supervision was again passed over to the College of Education.
1979All Graduate programs were placed unded the Graduate College headed by a Dean and offered these specializations: MS Mathematics Education, MS Mass Communication, MS Educational Administration, MS Biological Science, MS Physical Sciences, MS Social Studies, Bachelor of Business Management, Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Industrial Management for Industrial Programs, Master of Government Management, Doctor of Education major in Educational Management.
January 16, 1980The Sports, Physical Education and Recreation Department (SPERD) was established (replacing the Physical Education Department) as an independent unit under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
1982The College of Engineering and Technology first offered BS Manufacturing Engineering. The PLM Computer Center was established.
1983The College of Education offered BSE courses with majors in Communication Arts in English or Filipino, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Social Studies or Nutrition, and Health Education. The Graduate School was restructured vertically into: the (1) Graduate School of Arts, Sciences, Education and Nursing under the administration of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; the (2) Graduate School of Management under the administration of the Dean of the College of Business Administration; and the (3) Graduate School of Engineering under the Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. The Post-basic/Supplemental Course of the College of Nursing was abolished, while retaining the BS in Nursing.
1984The BSE major in Physical Science was abolished. The BS Computer Science was offered by CET. The City College opened and its sub-unit City College Satellite Education Center. The Center offered off-campus education to students who can qualify for admission in selected schools of the Division of City Schools, Manila. The College of Medicine opened with the degree programs for Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Medicine.
1985The Bachelor of Social Work and Management was offered under the College of Arts and Sciences.
1986The BS Electronics and Communications Engineering and the BS Manufacturing Engineering were phased out. The former became an area of BS Electrical Engineering while the latter became an area of Mechanical Engineering. BS Architecture and BS Fine Arts were opened. Doctor of Business Management and Administration was offered by the Graduate School of Management.
1987BSE major in Nutrition and Health Education was renamed Home Economics and Food Service.
1988The College of Nursing offered Diploma in Midwifery, Supplemental Program.City College was abolished and its courses were absorbed by the academic colleges of CBA, CET and CN.

 

Golden era (1989-1999)

1989College of Law opened with a degree program on Bachelor of Laws. All Graduate programs were placed under one Dean assisted by a Director for each of the graduate programs.
1992PLM celebrated its Silver (25th) Anniversary of foundation.
1997PLM strengthened its Open University and Distance Learning Program.

 

Renaissance era (2000-Present)

  • 2000 - Inauguration of the Pamantasang Limbagan ng Maynila (PLM University Press) and the Development Center for Women Studies and Services, and the revival of the Manila Studies program under the new Sentro ng Araling Manileno.
  • 2001 - Establishment of the College of Tourism, Hotel and Travel Industry Management, and the College of Physical Education and Recreational Sports. Separation of the Department of Architecture from the College of Engineering & Technology. The opening of the PLM District Colleges and the installation of off-campus programs with partner schools in Saudi Arabia and Thailand through visiting professors agreement. The inauguration of the Mabuhay Integrated Learning Center. The campaign to amend Republic Act 4196 (University Charter) began.
  • 2002 - Merging of the Department of Social Work, Department of Psychology and the College of Education into College of Human Development.
  • 2003 - The dissection of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) into three new colleges - College of Mass Communication, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Sciences.
  • 2004 - Implementation of the English Proficiency Program.
  • 2005 - The Retention Policy and the Admission requirements for undergraduates were modified.
  • 2007 - New buildings were built; improvement of facilities and rules continued; massive effort to modernize the campus started; library collection beefed up.
  • 2008 - Installation of wireless fidely facilities and free Internet stations.
  • 2009 - Inauguration of the President Ramon Magsaysay Entrepreneurial Center.
